The Starlight Festival

What is the Starlight Festival?

In conjunction with the second annual Cathedral of Christ the Light Crèche Festival, the Starlight Festival will exhibit crèches (the nativity scene) from the Parishes and Pastoral Centers of the Diocese of Oakland. The showing of these crèches in the Cathedral Event Center will take place concurrently with the display of professional crèche exhibits in the Cathedral from December 9 - 11.

The Starlight Festival welcomes one (1) entry from each parish/pastoral center as determined by the pastoral leadership in each parish/pastoral center. Using their creativity, craft-making skills and unique ethnic and cultural diversity, each parish/pastoral center will determine how their individual crèche (nativity scene) will be displayed to best reflect their parish/pastoral center family and rich Christmas tradition.  Or the parish/pastoral center may decide to submit the nativity scene that is displayed in their parish/pastoral center during the Christmas season to represent them.

What are the guidelines for the Starlight Festival?

PREPARATION GUIDELINES:

• Registration for the Starlight Festival is FREE. Register by Friday, November 18.
• Crèche entries are limited to one (1) per parish/pastoral center.
  
• The crèche display can occupy up to: 5' W x 4' D x 7' H.  (Crèches larger than the dimensions listed will be evaluated on a case by case basis depending on available space). The crèche display should be suitable for viewing from 360°.
• Display tables will be provided.  If you have a special stand, table and/or pedestal for displaying the crèche, make note of this information when you register.
• Signage identifying each parish crèche will be provided by the Cathedral.
• Include a (1) one page description regarding the significance of the crèche, if desired. The description should be typed on an 8 ½ x 11 white paper.

EVENT DAY GUIDELINES:

• Dried flowers, wood, stones, bricks, and textiles are permitted.  Artificial flowers or greens, fountains, recorded music and extra lighting are not permitted.  Any leaking crèche display may be removed.
• Each parish group is responsible for delivery, installation and removal of their parish crèche.  Please enter the service driveway on Grand Avenue, proceed to the loading dock to deliver the crèche and then park in the Cathedral Garage.  The parking rate is $5.00 per car; car pooling is encouraged.
• Installation of non-floral elements of a display will take place from 9:30 – 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 8. Flowers and greenery are to be arranged on Friday, December 9 beginning at 9:00 am. All flowers must be fumigated and greenery fire retardant in keeping with the City of Oakland fire codes.
• Installations must be completed by 12 Noon on Friday, December 9.
• A representative from each parish/pastoral center submitting an entry is requested at the Cathedral Crèche Festival Lecture on Sunday, December 11 at 4:00 pm. A recognition ceremony will immediately follow the lecture.

CONCLUSION OF THE FESTIVAL:

At the conclusion of the festival, each parish crèche display must be removed completely by Monday, December 12, 9:00 am – Noon.

 

NOTE: During the delivery, installation and removal of each parish crèche, the Cathedral of Christ the Light shall not be held responsible for any damage to the crèches and/or display fixtures.
