Legal Justice Center

The Mission of the Legal Justice Center is to increase access to social justice through preventive education, community advocacy and operation of a free legal clinic. The Center’s programs are threefold:

  • First, "Know Your Rights" workshops are conducted monthly, on a rotating slate of topics ranging from immigrant rights to elder abuse to children’s rights. Target audience members include low-income and indigent members of our communities, and social justice advocates working with these historically invisible populations.
  • Second, the Legal Justice Center offers free legal advice and referrals for low-income and indigent individuals living in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Anyone who contacts the clinic may have an intake interview with a volunteer lawyer or paralegal, who will help the individual assess his or her legal needs and provide limited advice and referrals to appropriate partner agencies for direct representation.

  • Third, the Center hosts spring and fall "Breaking Bread for Social Justice" dinners geared towards bringing lay advocates and community members together to learn about social justice issues in a welcoming and supportive environment. The most recent dinner featured several inspiring speakers and attracted more than 175 guests.

All of the Legal Justice Center’s programs are free and they are offered on a non-exclusive, non-discriminatory basis, irrespective of religious affiliation.
